Philanthropy

  • Philanthropy is as easy as 1-2-3

The Kappa girls of Zeta Sigma are passionate advocates of community service. It is one of the most important aspects of our chapter and greek life at the University of North Texas.  As individuals with time, talent and treasure, we first support our families. Second we participate in local projects. Third we look to the greater good—projects with far-reaching results. We apply this to our chapter by first supporting our family—the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation. This Foundation  gives aid to deserving Kappas of all ages who find themselves in financial need due to misfortune or illness. Second we participate in local campus and community projects. These are events put on by other sororities and fraternities on campus along with organizations we feel are in need in the Denton area. Third we support the greater good, by joining with all Kappas everywhere to support Reading is Fundamental. RIF prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most.

Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.5 million children with 16 million new, free books and literacy resources each year.

All RIF programs combine three essential elements to foster children's literacy: reading motivation, family and community involvement, and the excitement of choosing free books to keep.

In February 2009, Kappa held its first annual Reading is Key event Grand Kappa Station, a philanthropy program designed to show children the joy of reading and learning. Kappas from UNT, with the help of our alumni, gathered at our house for a fun-filled night of reading, arts and crafts, games, and snacks.
